Charley Phelps è il dirigente di un'importante catena di negozi bersagliata da una banda di malavitosi. L'uomo è innamorato di Florence Rice, una delle commesse, ma la loro storia d'amore è interrotta sul nascere anche perché Charley deve cercare in ogni modo di scampare ai gangster e ricostruirsi una credibilità.
