Vivienne Le Coudy è una donna indipendente, che stringe una relazione con l’immigrato danese Holger Olsen e si trasferisce con lui a Elk Flats, Nevada. Quando Olsen decide di combattere nella Guerra Civile, Lascia Vivienne a cavarsela da sola, in un luogo controllato dal corrotto sindaco Rudolph Schiller e dal suo spregiudicato socio in affari Alfred Jeffries.
